Disertation Strategic Operation for Water Table Control at Tidal Lowland Agriculture in South Sumatera Indonesia

The general objective of this study was to develop operational strategy of water table control at reclaimed tidal lowland area for food crops cultivation. The used crop indicators were rice and corn. The study area is reclaimed tidal lowland areas at Delta Telang I Primer 8 as representative of land typology A and at Delta Saleh Primer 10 as representative of land typology C. The agro-hydrology monitoring was conducted at tertiary block 4 and 6 on Delta Saleh as well as tertiary block 2 and 5 on Delta Telang I. The concept of tidal lowland development in general is divided into two, namely conservation and reclamation approach. The conservation approach is to set the area that need to be protected (protection, preservation) and the reclamation of tidal lowland is setting up that needs to be improved functions and benefits (reclaimed). Recently the tidal lowlands that have been reclaimed were used for agricultural land, plantations, fisheries etc. Concerning with the land that was reclaimed Telang and Saleh tidal lowland reclamations areas is currently not maximized the utilization patterns. In this study by computer simulation and model adaptation in the field will be tested several alternative development. The scenario will be developed is based on several considerations that are the condition of land, network systems and hydro-climatology characters. Based on these data, the quantification of current land use scenarios can be constructed. The preliminary draft land use scenarios for regional typology A (wet) is the use of rice-paddy, maize, and to land typology C (dry) as for rainfed rice-corn-conservation. Computer models and Drainmod and Duflow were used as tools for preparing and testing various scenarios for determining the best recommendation. Adaptation field model shows that the concept of conservation and land reclamation can be done simultaneously if the farmer was able to applied water level control properly. Water level is regulated according to the needs of plants, and it will be able to minimize the effect of oxidation of pyrite and land subsidence (subsidence). This research was also able to prepare a strategy of land use patterns. Approach water level status in relative to the soil surface considered highly accurate in determining the potential for planting patterns that can be developed. To develop the standard field operating properly will require the construction of hydrological monitoring system in each area of delta development. At least daily routine observations made during one year in the wet climatic conditions, normal and dry. For further utilization, a computer model was capable to predict the pattern of daily water level dynamics according to plan land use patterns.
